The fast and easy spring bass fishing on Lake Travis has finally arrived. Many shorelines are teeming with active largemouth and Guadalupe bass engaged in pre-spawn and spawning behavior.
My recent clients are averaging almost 30 bass per four-hour morning excursion, with several more jumping off on their way to my boat.
Soft plastics are producing the best action for numbers and size average up to 4 pounds. Teaching beginner anglers how to master plastic worm fishing is a lot of fun when the bass are so aggressive in shallow water.
A variety of other lure types are also beginning to generate action as the lake temperature has reached 64 degrees. Small spinnerbaits, crankbaits, swimbaits and hard jerkbaits have fooled some nice bass.
Surface lures should come on strong in a week or so as lots of post-spawn bass begin to chase threadfin shad and glass minnows. Use an erratic stop-and-go retrieve to trigger vicious surface strikes.
Bonus species like stripers and white bass will crash this topwater festival as they compete with the largemouth bass.
This past week I saw for the first time an exotic deer specie cross the road in Lakeway on my way to the marina. A beautiful blackbuck antelope sauntered across the road shaking his head with the two long vertical horns.
This escapee from a Hill Country exotic game ranch turned out to be a good omen for that morning's fishing.
