How Gifts For Good Is Making It Easy For Companies To Gift With Impact - Forbes

Gifts for Good is a supercool e-commerce marketplace for products made by cause-based enterprises, making it easy for businesses to give thoughtful employee and client gifts while creating social and environmental impact.

It was founded by Laura Hertz and Jerry Eisenberg who were classmates at University of Southern California where they were both obtaining their Master’s in Social Entrepreneurship in 2017.

I caught up with their Chief Impact Officer Jenise Steverding to find out more.

Afdhel Aziz: Jenise, welcome! Please tell us about Gifts for Good and how you joined them?

Jenise Steverding: I joined them in summer 2017 as the Chief Impact Officer and we launched the company in the Fall of 2017 gaining some initial great organic traction.

While we are focused on creating solutions making it easy for businesses to give in bulk, anyone who wants to go with their gifts can shop in our store.

MORE FOR YOU

Aziz: Please tell us about who is coming to you for gifts - your customers?

Steverding: From Fortune 500 companies and early-stage startups, to families gifting during the holidays, our customers come to us for the unique opportunity to make an impact through their gifts. The cultural movement around sustainability, ethical sourcing, and social responsibility are more and more in demand and our customers come to us because they trust us to provide a quality product that has true impact.

Many companies, even those with CSR departments, struggle to find ways to maintain their missions to change the world through social impact initiatives. We provide them a way to propel these initiatives through existing budgets and mechanisms necessary to the maintenance and success of their business relationships. We also offer the option to provide a social impact report based on their gift purchases.

One thing we try to do is to connect the customer and recipient to the impact by telling the story. Each of our products comes with a story card talking about the good that is happening through our gifts. These story cards are something our customers really enjoy.

Aziz: What are some of the partners you work with and what are your most popular products?

Steverding: We've partnered with leading brands such as SNAP, American Express, and National Geographic to do their business gifting, but we have also worked with a number of celebrity clients looking to give gifts with meaning. As a B Corporation we have a number of fellow B Corp companies who come to us for gifting as they want their gifting strategy to align with their overall mission.

Some our most popular gifts in 2020 were our Home Town Rocks Glasses that are customized with the US city map of your choice, our Make a Meal Give A Meal Gift Box that employs at-risk women and also provides a meal to a child in need, our BIPOC Gift Box and our Smokey Black Diamond Blanket. We also developed a product line called an Honor Cards where they allow someone to fund a tangible social impact through the purchase of the card. We have 10 of these cards and they provide everything from an hour of care to a rescue pet to 10 masks for a health care worker serving on the front lines of COVID-19. These 10 honor cards were our top selling product category proving that people are really wanting to find ways to do good.

Aziz: They all sound amazing! What kind of partners would you like to work with in the future?

Steverding: We would love to partner with any businesses looking to simplify their gifting program and add social impact. In 2020 we launched our new GIFTforward Gifting Software to help serve businesses who were gifting at scale but didn’t have many home addresses in a new COVID-19 world. The software allows for a branded email to be sent to their gifting list and the gift recipient then selects the item they want and enters in their shipping address making it very easy for the business, and a great experience for the recipient to select what they want most.

In addition, we added the ability for the recipient to also gift-it-forward into a tangible donation of their choice if they preferred. I’m so pleased with our impact in 2020 that includes providing over 85,000 meals to children in need, planting over 500,000 trees, and creating over 36,000 hours of employment for individuals with barriers to work. This only happens through partnerships.
