
It’ll be a good long while before anyone knows the full extent of the learning loss suffered by 700,000ish New York City public-school kids who’ve been attending class remotely, or the 300,000ish who’ve been learning at least partially in-person, since COVID descended. But educated guesses say hundreds of thousands of students have made minimal gains, stalled or backslid. Repairing the academic damage done is a gargantuan challenge, as is helping youngsters who’ve been missing the social and emotional and physical health benefits of putting on a backpack every day.
