Omar Easy used to be a fullback in the NFL, but he wants the community really to think of him as a passionate educator with a laser focus on equity and diversity for schools as he soon steps into the role of superintendent of Wayland Public Schools.
“It’s always been a goal of mine, I’ve always envisioned myself leading the district and being a collaborative leader,” Easy told the Herald.
The Wayland School Committee announced it was entering negotiations with Easy last month, saying he “impressed us all with his passion for education and his student focused approach.”
Easy will start as superintendent in July, replacing outgoing Superintendent Arthur Unobskey, and said he plans to form a task force around school reopening and get a comprehensive view of what supports are needed in the district.
“I want to make sure our teachers are safe and are comfortable being in the building, our administrators the same, and our students. I have to be very mindful of what they’re missing right now,” Easy said.
Easy most recently served as the executive director of the academies of Everett High School and was also the director of organizational assessment for the city of Everett.
He holds a a Ph.D. in educational leadership and a M.Ed. in educational administration from Pennsylvania State University — where he played college ball — along with an MBA from the University of Phoenix.
“I’m sitting with this wealth of knowledge and it’s just a waste to not really be someone who can implement things and pioneer changes,” said Easy.
He added, “To be an educator, it’s really a calling.”
Easy is also a former NFL fullback, playing three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and one season with the Oakland Raiders.
Easy was modest about his professional football career, but said, “I played sports at the highest level you could possibly play sports at and that’s not an easy task — it’s taught me perseverance and determination and a really good conception of teaming.”
He said being a good scholar always comes before being a good athlete.
Easy said he’s looking forward to uniting the community around his passion for equitable schooling and providing a quality education to every single student.
By the time Easy begins his role in July, the coronavirus pandemic will hopefully be better controlled and contained. Regardless, taking on the task of leading the district through pandemic recovery will present various challenges.
“I’m certain that there will be some leftovers from COVID, I’m hoping by that time when school starts that our entire teacher staff and administrators will be vaccinated,” Easy said.
Having children in staff back in the classroom is important, said Easy, who added he’s also looking forward to connecting with students, and asking about how the curriculum reflects their interests and goals.
