Duke head coach David Cutcliffe says his team has not practiced poorly this year, but when things have gone wrong early, like they did in Saturday's loss to Miami, the first time Duke's been shutout in 12 years, things can snowball quickly.
obviously, um, outcome. Not anything close to what we wanted expected. Um, you hate that for your seniors, but I'll quickly tell you that this is not their memory or our memory of them. There are many, many memories in great memories. Uh, we got a lot of things to work on. It starts up front and we'll work back. And it's not any one area, but we've got a try to win the line of scrimmage and you've got to start that early and we have to execute, um, both sides of the ball. Our players are playing hard, so it's my responsibility to put them in positions to be successful and put them in position to execute. So that's where the focus of we We've got one more game left and we're happy. We've got another opportunity to play with that. I'll take your questions. Just raise your hand. We'll get started with questions. Jim, will you get started? Yeah, David, you mentioned the issues upfront and seeing the first couple of possessions do got great field position and protect chase. It seems like that took the long past out of the playbook. Just you know how difficult is it saying? Long drives against the defense is good. Is Miami when you reduced to just throwing short intermediate routes? Well, I I don't know if I heard you clearly on all of it, but, you know, basically without explosive plays, you're gonna find it very difficult to score, particularly against the team like Miami. And they did a good to the quarterback. They put a lot of pressure on us, couldn't hold the ball. We threw the ball underneath lot. We had a couple of calls that were down the field that, you know, the second half sack fumble I felt bad about. I called a post trying to get the ball down the field, and obviously we didn't have time to get it off. But it's not just there. It's across the board, and it's my responsibility to put us in those positions to be successful. So, yes, taking a drive of 15 plays against the defense like that is really hard. So we gotta find a way to get some explosive plays and we're playing another A C C game next week and it won't be any easier. Go, Steve Wiseman. Steve, your media. Thank you. David. The TV crew mentioned something about Chris. Rump being injured is that something happened to him at the end of the game. Everything right? Oh, um, that was the wrong number one. Uh, I got you, Uh, Crest War number one in this game. John Tavis got injured. He got hit in the upper body and they took him in, but it was not Chris Romp went in. Okay. Thank you. Uh, glad to clarify that. Not happy that John Tavis has hurt, but I'm just clarifying it wasn't Chris. Thank you. Yeah, I appreciate that. I appreciate that. Um uh, follow up. Another question I had about the about the offense. You guys hadn't been shot out in a long time. I think it's been 12 years. Um So what happened tonight is that you've talked about rock bottom before and losing games by lopsided margins? Is that another thing that should that should spur some pride here among those guys? You know, I'm not I don't know why I'm not hearing. I don't know if the volumes up on this or what it is, but, um, I know I heard to shut out in 12 years and just It's a combination. I think where my mind is is not the point total as much as the breakdowns and the circumstances that lead to something like that. Um, obviously, we can point to turnovers, but you've got to go beyond that. You've got to go toe execution. You got to go toe. You look at scheme. You look at every little thing we're doing. Um, and we don't practice poorly around here. It we don't. And we, um we got good things, and we can execute. And But there are times I think when things don't go well early, that is very easy to fall into that. That that mental slump mode. And so I think we gotta look at every little detail and find it. And the only way you get out of it is fight your way out of it. And we do know how to do that. Thank you. Gotta Shane Smith? Yeah, Head Coach E. I mean, looking at between this game and Syracuse last year and Wake Forest the year before that. I mean, it's three straight years of these big losses at home late in the season. Eyes there, any, you know, does that have anything to do with maybe the mentality of the team at this time of year? Is there another common theme? You kind of see running throughout those games? I don't know that I could tie those together. Different teams, different years. This year's been a very difficult year. Obviously, when you're not winning, when things don't go well early, I think it's very difficulty. But I don't think I would read anything into those three games together. Good. Charlie Meekins. Good evening, David. Um, five more turnovers tonight. Um, you lied. Duke leads the nation in turnovers. Um, why is it that you haven't gotten that corrected by now? Here in in the summer? You think? Well, I don't know that. You just correct it. There are reasons and different reasons. And maybe there are 100 reasons that it occurs. It's not something that you don't work on. We work constantly on protecting the ball. It's not an anti turnover mentality, it to protect the ball mentality. Obviously, 20 twenties been unique and different. Um, you know, it's hard to stop the bleeding. Sometimes you don't know if it's in their head, but every drill every day. Everything we do is about taking care of the ball. And you really you couldn't increase the emphasis more than we have. Maybe you do too much emphasis, and it gets in people's heads. So you could beat this up on. And about the only thing I could tell you right now and I'm not making an excuse is 2020. I mean, that's that's about where we are with that. Thank you. Steve. Is your hand still raise? No. Sorry. Didn't take it down. Erin. They go. Chris Idol, Go ahead. Hey, Chris. Good clip. Sorry. Pretty tough loss tonight. Um, when you start evaluating for next year, you start next week against Florida State. Started looking at different players and different places and see if you could maybe get a spark and see that might be something you could carry into spring practice. Well, you're always looking at your depth. Um, you're getting years like this. You certainly start having conversations as a staff and not just in games, but you're evaluating your depth. You have ongoing recruiting. We've got a lot of good young players. Certainly a lot of them are playing snaps anyway, So as we look and build tour? Absolutely. But do we focus on our seniors and sending them out winners first and foremost for sure.
