Here are my hot reads from the Buffalo Bills' 18-10 victory against the New York Jets Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
Hottest topic
Nothing came easy in a win that figured to be, well, pretty comfortable.
Let's not kid ourselves about the Jets. They are a terrible team that is 0-7 on merit.
Let's not kid ourselves about the Bills, either. After those back-to-back losses against the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs, the main talking point about the Bills was that they simply don't belong in the category of the NFL's top teams.
The Buffalo Bills had a kicking problem at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Despite improving to 5-2, that still seems to be the case. The Bills' defense looked better, especially in the second half, but that isn't saying much against the Jets' inept offense. The Jets managed four yards and two first downs on five possessions after halftime.
The big problem Sunday was Buffalo's offense, which, despite Josh Allen throwing for 307 yards, failed to generate a touchdown.
It marked the 13th win in franchise history where the Bills failed to score a TD and the first since 2007.
There's something missing with the Bills. They go long stretches of playing with minimal energy and no urgency. For the better part of the first half, the only team showing those qualities was the Jets.
Buffalo Bills rookie kicker Tyler Bass has been a bit of an adventure this season.
At the end of the first quarter, the Jets had the ball for 12 minutes and 25 seconds, while the Bills had it for a mere 2:35.
* Cole Beasley caught a game-high 11 passes, on 12 targets, for 112 yards.
* Tyler Bass' providing all of the Bills' 18 points, including a career-long 53-yard field goal late in the second quarter, qualifies as doing something well. But Bass also managed to make the ice cold list.
* Andre Roberts' 58-yard kickoff return at the start of the second half. The Bills proceeded to drive to their third field goal.
* Allen connecting with tight end Tyler Kroft for a 38-yard completion early in the fourth quarter. The possession ended with Bass' second missed field goal.
* Defensive end Jerry Hughes getting his first two sacks of the season and an interception.
* Allen fumbling with 11 minutes left in the second quarter to set up a Jets touchdown drive to put the Bills in a 10-0 hole with 7:22 remaining in the second quarter.
* Bass missing wide left on the first of his eight field-goal attempts of the day, a 45-yarder on the Bills' first possession, and also missing wide left on a 37-yard attempt early in the fourth quarter.
It is only the third time in franchise history that the Bills have landed on 18 points.
* The Bills being penalized 11 times for minus-106 yards, while the Jets had five penalties for minus-39 yards. The worst, an illegal formation that wiped out a 22-yard Allen touchdown pass to Gabriel Davis.
Setting the table
The Bills will face the new-look New England Patriots Sunday at Bills Stadium. By new, that's without Tom Brady as their quarterback.
