Successful people know on what and on what not to focus to maximize their efficiency and effectiveness at work. They are intentional about avoiding tasks that have little redeeming value and eliminating other tasks that diminish their time and energy. Here are three things successful people do that help them to maintain their productivity:
1. Stop perusing social media feeds.
Many people are guilty of logging onto one of their social media platforms during the work day, whether you are at your desk looking for a mental break, waiting for a meeting to start, during lunch or walking down the hall. Being on social media to kill time is not a good reason to be on social media because it can kill your time without returning much value.
Social media can be a great tool for career advancement, if you use it strategically and know your intentions before logging on. Don’t go on social platforms just to procrastinate. Successful people use social media for a purpose, not to endlessly peruse their news feeds.
2. Avoid trying to continuously keep your email inbox at zero.
There is a lot written about how to keep your inbox clean. Successful people know that keeping it organized is important but not if you spend more time organizing your inbox than working on more pressing matters. Consider dedicating a chunk of time once a week to cleaning your email inbox rather than constantly trying to keep it clean each time you check your email every day.
3. Don’t worry about each and every negative thing as it happens.
If something happens during your day that disturbs you and you know you won’t be able to stop thinking about it, write it down and stop thinking about it for the time being. Take time at the end of the day to reflect on the things that made you feel uncomfortable.
Batching your worries and devoting a time to reflect each day on all your concerns can reduce the time and energy you might have if you were to keep switching between work and worrying throughout the day. Successful people know that re-hashing thoughts gets you no closer to resolving them. Don’t waste time as they happen, but store them to reflect on these later in the day.
Successful people know that there are some things you can do without each day. Stop looking at social media constantly, resist the temptation of constantly cleaning your email inbox and try not to expend energy on every negative issue that arises. To help you streamline your day, take a targeted approach and batch tasks.
