Regular readers of this column will know how much I love facials. Not the namby pamby, wishy washy stuff (if I wanted to ‘relax’ I’d take a bath or read a book). For a team with Gonzalo Higuain, Blaise Matuidi, Rodolfo Pizarro and high expectations for their inaugural season, the losses continue to mount for Inter Miami CF (four losses in their last five, including three straight).
After their latest loss to NYCFC in Week 15, a 3-2 home setback, the playoff zone is drifting further away. The gap from that final postseason berth is now six points with just eight matches remaining in the season.
So what are the issues at play for the expansion team? The same that have been plaguing them all season long: individual errors.
“We seem to be making mistakes that are costly,” Matuidi said postgame. “We are in a moment that’s difficult. I believe tonight showed us that there is hope and that we can get this turned around. But it is definitely difficult to accept.”
“It seems that when we give up that many goals, it is a concentration issues,” Matuidi continued. “It seems that our confidence seems to dip. We have to work to find that path. This is definitely something we can fix quickly. We seem to have started with a bit more challenges offensively. Now we’re good when we have the ball, but we’re not quite there yet on the small details. That’s what we’re going to have to work on at training.”
“We can’t give away the goals we’re giving away and expect to win games,” said Lewis Morgan, who scored two goals but raised his hand as being at fault on the first NYCFC goal which came on the heels of a clearance of an NYCFC set piece.
“That’s down to the players. That’s something we need to look at. You can coach all you want, do drills, whatever. Blaise has probably hit the nail on the head on concentration. The last few games have been slack, conceded goals … We made the individual mistakes tonight and were punished. That’s what happens at this level.”
“On one side it’s hard to understand and easy to explain,” head coach Diego Alonso said. “We’re clearly committing mistakes that allow the opponent to score. We generally do things better than the opponent. We have better possession, we have more shots on goal, more crosses, more duels won, more attacks than the opponent. We defend well and we press well. That’s why I say it’s easy to explain, but it’s tough to understand: How could we do everything we’re doing and make these mistakes.
“[The mistakes] have cost us wins in Orlando [at the MLS is Back Tournament] and also before that when the league season started. I think it’s about concentration, being focused and individual errors that we have to try to work on and keep giving [the players] confidence because I repeat, I think the team plays well. We always do enough to deserve to win the game, but to win the games we have to be infinitely better. That’s what we have to correct. We have to reduce the number of mistakes we’re committing. If not, it’s tough to compete in any league at any level.”
It won’t help that they’re set to lose one of their most talented players to international duty. Alonso revealed that Pizarro will be joining the Mexican national team for two friendly matches in October and will miss 4-5 MLS matches: “If you ask me if I’m in agreement,” Alonso said. “I’d say no.”
Morgan still believes that the team has what it takes to aim for the postseason, despite being tied for the worst point total in MLS with D.C. United (11) at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
“Six points isn’t a huge gap. We’ve got a really talented group. We can definitely do that. We can close that. We can go on a winning run,” Morgan said. “It’s tough to turn the momentum around. But it’s something that once you get that first win anything can happen. We just need to get into the playoffs and then it’s one-off knockout games … Definitely confident we can get there but also there’s the realization that we won’t get there if we play like we’re playing at the moment.”

There was no parade to celebrate the 200th anniversary of their town for the same reason there was a Germ-X bottle on the sign-up table, chairs spread apart and proud Glenville residents in masks, waiting to see their local officials raise a new commemorative flag outside the town’s municipal center on Saturday morning.
“The pandemic did something quite unexpected,” said Christopher A. Koetzle, town supervisor, in a speech to the small crowd of local residents. “Yes, the bicentennial is and should be about celebrating our culture … but this experience of 2020 shined the light on something even more extraordinary. It shined the light on something quite ordinary: the average resident.”
This would be the only public event held this year, and it was capped at 50 people. Proclamations had been read by several government officials, but now Koetzle was reflecting on what the town of Glenville had experienced.
He told the crowd about the small business owners who were struggling financially, who broke down in tears in front of him this year.
“I just don’t think I’m going to make it,” Koetzle recalled one owner telling him, and another who asked, “What am I going to do?”
“The helplessness I felt when all I could mutter was, ‘We are here with you. We’re gonna help you. And trust me, you are not alone in this community,’” Koetzle said, looking toward his constituents, and many began nodding and shaking their heads.
They were together now on a breezy October morning, and while the bicentennial festivity was not the full-blown gala that had been imagined, it was instead a quiet reflection of how far the town had come since 1820, of how much the community was withstanding and suffering through in just a single tumultuous year.
“And they will know 50 years from now, and a 100 years from now and 200 years from now who we are and what we did to leave our community a better place,” Koetzle told the crowd.
He would never forget, Koetzle said, the call he got from an elderly woman just before the bicentennial event.
“She said if it were not for this town, there were days where she would not have eaten,” Koetzle said, his voice quivering. And then he repeated it: “She would not have eaten.”
He thanked residents for their help during the pandemic, and to conclude the ceremony, they raised the American flag and the commemorative light blue bicentennial flag.
People gathered beneath it, cheered, then caught up with neighbors.
“How are you holding up?” Monty Wiseman asked someone. His wife, Jill Wiseman, chair of the 2020 committee, was tasked with organizing the planned bicentennial gala.
“This is a tough year,” she said. “But it’s nice the community came out. Maybe next year we’ll be able to revisit our celebration.”
(WVLT/CNN) - A new tool from Amazon looks to make shopping easier.
CNN reported that the company introduced Amazon One on Tuesday. It connects your palm print to a stored credit card so you can place your hand above a sensor to enter and buy items at a checkout-free Amazon Go stores.
The feature will be available at two Amazon Go stores in Seattle, and the company plans to put it in more cities, such as New York and San Francisco.
Before trying it, CNN reported that users must insert a credit card in an Amazon One device and hold a palm above it.
After customers enroll, a user holds their palm above a scanner to enter the store, and anything they take will be automatically charged to their credit card.

There is great joy to be taken in autumn’s apple displays, whether at the local supermarket or farmers markets. Stacks of apples in an array of fall hues stack in alluring piles. This simple apple tart is one way to show them off.
Use refrigerated prepared dough, such as Pillsbury Pie Crusts or those from Trader Joe’s, and then layer apple slices on top, slightly overlapping the slices in concentric circles to cover the dough. The flavor of the tart-sweet apples shines through in this scrumptious finale, the crust offering a pleasing texture contrast that compliments the fruit and corrals the rich juices.
Preferably serve it warm accompanied with ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.
Simple Apple Tart
Yield: 6 to 8 servings
1 (15-ounce) package refrigerated crusts (2 rolled crusts generally packaged in a rectangular box), chilled
Juice of 1 lemon
5 to 6 medium-sized Pink Lady apples or Gala apples, see cook’s notes
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) butter, melted
1/3 cup turbinado sugar, divided use
2 tablespoons honey
For serving: whipped cream or ice cream
Cook’s notes: Pink Lady apples are delectable in this tart. I find them at my local supermarket, but if you prefer, substitute Gala apples. Turbinado sugar is raw sugar that has been steam-cleaned. The coarse crystals are a honey-brown color and have a subtle molasses flavor. It’s often sold in the natural food section of the supermarket and is available at natural food stores.
1. Adjust oven rack to middle position. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Unroll one of the pie crusts and place on parchment paper. Unroll second pie crust and cut out a ring 1/2-wide around the edge of the crust. Cut crosswise into three pieces to make them easier to transfer. Transfer to edge of crust that is on the pan and press in place (so now you have a double layer of crust around the edge). Pinch to make a ridge around the edge about 1/2-inch high. Prick with tines of a fork at 2-inch intervals. Place in refrigerator.
2. Squeeze lemon juice in medium-large bowl. Peel, core and cut apples into thin slices, placing them as you work in the bowl with the juice and tossing them from time to time to prevent browning.
3. Remove crust from refrigerator and lightly brush with butter. Arrange apple slices in two concentric circles overlapping them slightly (start with the outside circle). Brush with half of the remaining melted butter. Remove 1 tablespoon of the sugar and set aside to use as garnish; sprinkle remaining sugar over apples. Bake 12 minutes.
4. Remove from oven (and shut oven door). Brush apples and rim of tart with remaining butter. Drizzle apples with honey. Return to oven and bake 15 to 17 minutes longer. Remove from oven and sprinkle with reserved sugar. Cool at least 20 minutes before serving. If desired, serve with ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.
