HomeKit Weekly: Easy to install smart home projects for apartments and rentals - 9to5Mac

easy.indah.link

HomeKit adds many benefits to a home, but oftentimes, it can handle mounting products on the wall, above the door, or even swapping out a doorbell. There are plenty of HomeKit projects that work well in apartments or homes you are renting, though. Read on to find out the best HomeKit products for apartments and rentals.

HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything to do with Apple’s smart home framework.

August Smart Lock

An important benefit of the August Smart Lock is that you don’t have to replace the deadbolt’s exterior part. In an apartment complex, you could replace your lock’s interior portion with an August Lock while keeping the outside looking normal, so your property manager doesn’t get upset. When you get to move, it’ll take ten minutes to uninstall it and replace the old deadbolt. The August Smart Lock is one of my favorite HomeKit enabled devices.

August Wi-Fi Smart Lock

If you’ve ever struggled to find your keys while carrying bags full of groceries, you’ll love the August Smart Lock’s automatic unlock. As you walk up to the door, it’ll automatically open for you to step in and then re-lock a few minutes later. With easy installation and removal, it’s a perfect HomeKit product for apartments. Check out my detailed review for more information on the benefits of August Smart Lock.

eufy Indoor Camera

Eufy explains HomeKit delay with Indoor Cam

Outdoor cameras aren’t as practical for apartments and rental homes because they require you to make holes on the house’s exterior. An excellent option for cameras would be to use one of eufy’s indoor cameras pointed at your doors. Both it and the pan and tilt camera now support HomeKit Secure Video, so you can use your iCloud storage to store your recordings. Both cameras also support recording to an SD card. They plug into normal AC power and can sit on an end table or bookshelf, so they make for great HomeKit cameras for an apartment.

VOCOlinc outlet adaptors

If you have some existing appliances that you want to enable HomeKit support with, check out the VOCOlinc outlet adaptors. With this product, you could make a coffee pot “smart,” a lamp controllable with Homekit, or really anything you want to control from your phone.

Sonos Surround Sound

If you want to create a “media” room without installing speakers in the ceiling, a Sonos system will be an easy way to improve your audio without drilling any holes. Start with something like the Sonos Beam and pair it with two Sonos SL speakers. With AirPlay 2 support, you’ll be able to fit it right in with your Apple ecosystem and listen to Apple Music or Apple Podcasts.

Abode security system

abode iota

I’ve been using abode for my security system for the past six months. Installation would be ideal for a rental property or an apartment. The iota base station doubles as a motion sensor and camera; the door sensors can be installed using adhesive, so they can be removed when you go to move, and it can be entirely controlled from either the abode app or the Home app. I wrote up a detailed review earlier this year. The base station can run off Wi-Fi and includes a battery backup. When paired with professional monitoring, it has LTE redundancy for monitoring if your internet goes out. It can be installed in a few minutes and uninstalled in just a few minutes as well.

Wrap up on HomeKit for apartments

As with any HomeKit house, you’ll want to add on an Apple TV or a HomePod to be able to access your HomeKit setup remotely. One of these devices will act as your HomeKit hub. Are you living in an apartment or rental home and using HomeKit? What are some of your favorite ways to automate HomeKit?

Green Bay Packers Buzz: Easy schedule puts Green Bay in driver's seat for top seed - Packers News

easy.indah.link
CLOSE

Jim Owczarski and Olivia Reiner discuss why the Packers offense can still be productive, even if WRs Davante Adams and Allen Lazard don't play Monday. Packers News

Welcome to your Morning Buzz, rounding up news and views regarding the Green Bay Packers from around the web and here at PackersNews.com.

We'll start with ESPN's Bill Barnwell writing that the Packers' easy remaining schedule makes them the favorite to finish with the NFC's best record and earn the conference's only first-round playoff bye.

Barnwell writes:

The other good news for the Packers is that their schedule is projected to get much easier. They've played what FPI believes to be the league's 10th-hardest schedule through three weeks, but they'll play the seventh-easiest slate in all of football the remainder of the season. With just two other teams in the NFC starting 3-0 (the others being the Seahawks and Bears), the Packers are favorites to come away with the top seed in the NFC, which is even more valuable in the 14-team format than it was under the 12-team rule.

You can read Barnwell's entire analysis of the NFL's 3-0 teams here:

A setback for the Packers' passing game:

Pete Dougherty advises the Packers to make sure second-round running back AJ Dillon is ready should he be needed at some point this season:

Tom Silverstein writes about how the ability of the Packers' offense to pick up on Aaron Rodgers' audibles is giving them a big advantage in empty stadiums:

Former Packers safety LeRoy Butler and Silverstein look ahead to Monday night's game against the Falcons:

Silverstein and Jim Owczarski break down the matchup in their Green 19 podcast:

Dougherty answers readers' questions in his weekly Packers chat:

The Packers move up two spots into the No. 2 position in USA TODAY SPORTS' weekly rankings:

Green Bay remains No. 3 behind the Chiefs and Seahawks in the SI.com rankings. As Jenny Vrentas writes:

So, Aaron Rodgers had a point about the Packers flying under the radar. Shame on us for not assigning the proper weight to the motivational furor unleashed when his team drafted his would-be replacement. Will Jordan Love have the same effect Jimmy Garoppolo did on Tom Brady, inciting the Patriots’ second dynasty years? Time will tell, but what’s certain is that after Sunday night, the Packers are no under-the-radar team.

You can see the full rankings here:

The 2020 Packers are much like the 2011 version, both on offense and defense, writes ESPN's Rob Demovsky:

Here's just how good Rodgers was against the Saints:

Saints coach Sean Payton can't believe how bad his defense looked against Rodgers' bootleg plays:

Who are the Packers' "unsung heroes" this season? Rob Reischel identifies three in his latest piece for Forbes:

Have you noticed the reduction in holding penalties this season?

No, the Packers won't be part of a Monday night doubleheader. Here's the scheduling gymnastics expected to be used to reschedule the Titans-Steelers game:

An excellent look at the failed Mitch Trubisky experience:

You can’t kill ‘The Walking Dead’ that easy. TV’s zombie empire plots its next move - Chicago Tribune

“Daryl and Carol,” or “The Daryl and Carol Show” — which he said sounds like an undead variety hour — are Gimple’s puckish names for the as-yet untitled spinoff starring current main cast members Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride. In the nearer future, the franchise’s second spinoff, “World Beyond,” premieres Sunday immediately following the season 10 finale of the original “Walking Dead.” The sixth season of the franchise’s first spinoff, “Fear the Walking Dead,” premieres Oct. 11 with a surprising new direction (no spoilers here, sorry). Then there are the previously announced theatrical films starring Andrew Lincoln as erstwhile series lead Rick.

San Francisco Rolls Out Efforts to Make Voting Safe, Easy - NBC Bay Area

easy.indah.link

The city of San Francisco says it's ready to make voting during the coronavirus pandemic as easy and safe as possible.

"We’re not going to let COVID stop us from making sure that you have access to vote in San Francisco at your convenience," Mayor London Breed said Thursday.

The city unveiled a brand new voting center outside city hall where early voting will start as soon as Monday.

"Although we can’t do what we’ve done in the past and provide early voting in city hall, we are going to be doing early voting right outside on Grove Street in what looks like a beautiful party tent," Breed said.

People who visit the tent will have to follow coronavirus-related rules.

"Everything that’s happening here at Bill Graham Auditorium is organized so that people can maintain social distancing," San Francisco Department of Elections Director John Arntz said.

People can also drop off a mail-in ballot at the new voting center, but if it's too far or too busy, there are 588 other locations across the city where people can vote in person or drop off a ballot.

Breed said what's different this year is that the city will mail ballots to every registered voter.

You may think taking a pass on voting this year means you're rising above the system. But here's the truth: you're part of the system whether you participate or not.

People who plan on using a mail-in ballot should mail it back before Election Day.

"There are, unfortunately, thousands of ballots each time where people just mail it too late in the day it doesn’t get postmarked," State Senator Scott Wiener said.

To make sure votes get counted, San Francisco is giving ballots 17 days after Election Day to arrive — instead of the usual three days — just in case there are any issues with the postal service.

"There is no excuse for anyone in the city who is a registered voter not to a vote," Breed said.

Easy Seat Belt Safety Checks to Protect Your Children and Avoid Tragedy - ConsumerReports.org

easy.indah.link

Seat belts are among the oldest and most effective safety devices on cars. The latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that 14,955 lives were saved in 2017 due to seat belts. But this key safety feature has led to an occasional dangerous situation with children who wrapped themselves up in a seat belt and became stuck with the belt locked tight.

This danger recently gained attention when a near-tragedy occurred in Bedford, Mass., a community in the Boston area. Bedford police responded to a call about a child choking in a car because a seat belt was wrapped tightly around the child's neck. “This was a very dangerous situation, one that I have not encountered previously in more than 25 years of public safety experience,” Bedford Police Chief Robert Bongiorno said in a statement. The mother was able to cut the child free and apply CPR until help arrived.

KVUE at Home: Easy homemade fried rice - KVUE.com

easy.indah.link

In another episode of KVUE at Home, Hank Cavagnaro shows us how to make simple fried rice at home.

AUSTIN, Texas — Do you ever have leftover rice after ordering take out the night before? Or do you just love fried rice and keeping things pretty simple at home? Well, here's a quick and easy home-made fried rice recipe that you can try and experiment with.

First things first, what rice do you need? Leftover rice is the best. You want something dry that will soak up as much flavor as possible. If you're cooking your own, make it the day before and then spread it out onto a sheet pan and put it in the fridge overnight.

Also, I use a wok on a gas stove, and it's amazing. But you can still make this even if you don't have a wok or gas burners. Just get whatever you use as hot as possible.

The only other major tip is to get everything ready so when it goes in, you're not looking for anything.

RELATED: KVUE at Home: Pasta Aglio e Olio

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups day-old rice
  • Canola oil (or any other neutral oil, but not olive oil)
  • 3-5 cloves of garlic
  • 1/3 cup of carrots
  • 1/3 cup of peas
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 bunch of green onions (save some for garnish)
  • 1 tsp of white pepper
  • 1 tsp of onion powder
  • Salt
  • 4 tbsp of soy sauce
  1. Cook rice the night before (or use leftovers) and let it dry.
  2. Mince garlic
  3. Prep by placing carrots and peas in one bowl for easier mixing later
  4. Beat 3 eggs and set aside
  5. Slice green onions and put into a bowl with white pepper, onion powder, salt, and soy sauce.
  6. Heat wok on high heat and add a drizzle of canola oil
  7. Add in garlic for about 30 seconds to remove the bite
  8. Add rice and heat up while mixing the garlic in
  9. Add carrots and peas and distribute throughout
  10. Make a small well in the middle of the rice and add eggs. Let me start to cook before slowly bringing in the rice and mixing it with the egg mixture.
  11. Add the final bowl of ingredients and stir to mix well. Taste and adjust seasonings as desired.

I use this dish as an easy way to meal prep. It makes a big quantity that I can keep eating over the next week. Also, this dish allows for so much customization. Want chicken? Add it. Beef, tofu, pork? Doesn't matter, it's all going to be delicious and allows you to get into the kitchen and cook.

If you want to see Hank Cavagnaro cook up some of your favorite recipes, email him at hcavagnaro@kvue.com. You can also reach him on his Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.
